Today I want to write about i-sho dou-gen, it is a Japanse expression that roughtly translates as ” food is as good as medicine.”
I have been living long enough in the UK to understand the weather and culture. However, I was surprised with the fact how much indulgent food there is. I absolutely admire the generousity of people, but sometimes it is easy to be too generous with the calories as well.
Whenever I find a new delicious looking recipe, I always check the calories which is displayed with the world’s tiniest letters around the bottom of the recipe. “650kcal for a piece of cake??? No way! Is this a bad joke?” No wonder I have managed to put on 10kg !
Back in Japan, people are more aware of what they eat and intake calories. The biggest reason for this is that there are no hospitals that treat you for free there.
People spend a certain money every month for their health and life insurance in Japan like I used to do. If someone in your family becomes ill, your family can spend a fourtune for the treatment. On the other hand, British people seem to be quite relaxed about nutritions and healthy eating maybe because the NHS can provide treatment.
I understand that human beings don’t like to change habits unless they force to or been through crisis. Don’t get me wrong, I’m not trying to say which society is better to live. Both have pros and cons.
What I’m trying to say is that the importance of why we need healthy eating and what the benefit is. Cooking skills play a big part of important role. Thankfully, my mother taught me a lot when I was younger so that I can teach my cooking skills to others.
I believe it’s necessary to understand how to cook healthy at home and feed your family, leading your family to be healthy and happy.
